You have undoubtedly noticed the different abbreviations we use to describe our products. STF-WL, LDA 260 or HML; these are all kinds of shortcuts for interpreting the correct execution of the product. Since these abbreviations sometimes cause misunderstandings, we have written this blog post.
The seal size is measured from the outer surface of the liner. The shaft diameter plus liner determine which seal size is required. For example, a STA 170 means total a diameter of 170 millimetres with shaft and liner. In this example, the shaft diameter is between 146-160 millimetres. The machining (thickness) of the liner depends on the actual size of the shaft. The total diameter of shaft and liner will be 170 millimetres after machining, this is exactly what is required for the lip seals to be perfectly aligned.
STF – Supreme Standard Forward
The Supreme Standard is the basic design for stern tube and thruster seals of seagoing vessels. The forward seal prevents oil leakage from the stern tube to your engine room.
STF-WL – Supreme Standard Forward Water Lubricated
The Supreme Water-Lubricated Forward Seal (STF-WL) prevents water leakage from your open water lubricated stern tube system into your machine room.
LDF – Supreme Inland Vessel Forward
The Supreme Inland Vessel is a targeted design for stern tubes of inland vessels. The forward seal prevents oil leakage from the stern tube to your engine room.
STA – Supreme Standard Aft
The Supreme Standard is the basic design for stern tube and thruster seals of seagoing vessels. The aft seal prevents water ingress to the stern tube and oil leakage to the outside environment.
LDA – Supreme Inland Vessel Aft
The Supreme Inland Vessel is a targeted design for stern tubes of inland vessels. The aft seal prevents water ingress to the stern tube and oil leakage to the outside environment.
SAA – Supreme Standard Athmos Aft
The Supreme Athmos® is a targeted design for ships with a shallow draught up to 5 metres such as larger yachts, cruise ships and ferries.
SVA – Supreme Ventus Aft
The Supreme Ventus® is an intelligent, durable and self-regulating sealing solution that guarantees zero emissions of oil for seagoing vessels.
SGA – Supreme SeaGuard Athmos
For extra safety, you can combine the Supreme Athmos with the Supreme SeaGuard (SGA). The Supreme SeaGuard gives you a redundant lip seal for extra security against oil leakage into the marine environment.
SGV – Supreme SeaGuard Ventus
For extra safety, you can combine the Supreme Ventus with the Supreme SeaGuard (SGV). The Supreme SeaGuard gives you a redundant lip seal for extra security against oil leakage into the marine environment.
SG – Supreme SeaGuard
The Supreme SeaGuard gives you a redundant lip seal for extra security against oil leakage into the marine environment.
TS3 – Supreme Thruster
The Supreme TS3 is a targeted design for thrusters with a small build-in length.
TS4 – Supreme Thruster
The Supreme TS4 is a targeted design for thrusters that have to deal with heavy-duty operations.
WLC – Supreme Water Lubricated Composite
The Supreme Water-Lubricated Composite (WLC) seal is especially developed to prevent water leakage from your open water-lubricated stern tube system into your machine room.
RSU – Upper Rudder Stock Seal
The Supreme Rudder Stock prevents water ingress into the upper rudder stock bearings.
RSL – Lower Rudder Stock Seal
The Supreme Rudder Stock prevents water ingress into the lower rudder stock bearings.
BHW – Supreme Bulkhead (water-tight)
The Supreme Bulkhead seal (water-tight) is generally used to prevent flooding of the bulkhead seal’s adjacent compartments in the unlikely event of an accident.
BHG – Supreme Bulkhead (gas-tight)
The Supreme Bulkhead seal (gas-tight) is generally used to prevent flooding of the bulkhead seal’s adjacent compartments in the unlikely event of an accident.
L2T – Liquidyne 2-Stage
The Liquidyne 2-Stage is used in pumps that process relatively clean media that may contain abrasive particles that are no larger than 100 µm.
L3T – Liquidyne 3-Stage
The Liquidyne 3-Stage is especially developed for dredging pumps that process a polluted medium with abrasive media particles that are larger than 100 µm.
LDS – Liquidyne LDS
The Liquidyne LDS is specially designed for pumps that process polluted and aggressive media.
WA - Liquidyne 3-Stage WA
The Liquidyne 3-Stage (WA) pump seal is used in pumps that process water containing a relatively large number of abrasive particles or particles larger than 100 micron.
NBR – Nitril butadiene rubber compound
NBR stands for Nitril Butadiene Rubber and exists of Butadiene (1,3-butadiene) and Acrylonitrile (2-propenenitrile). NBR rubber is highly resistant to oil and grease and can withstand bending and compression.
FKM – Fluoride elastomer rubber compound
FKM is a special fluorocarbon-based synthetic (Viton) rubber. It is very resistant to many chemical substances and delivers excellent performances. Particularly in high-temperature applications.
FKM-EAL – Rubber compound suitable for EALs (bio oils)
FKM-EAL is a special developed lip seal compound for use with EALs. When using EAL, the use of Supreme® FKM-EAL lip seals is strongly recommended by Lagersmit.
HML – Hard Metal Layer
A liner with hard metal coating that improves the lifetime of the liner and reduces the wear down of the lip seals.
CPP – Controllable Propeller Pitch
This is a type of propeller with blades that rotate around their own longitudinal axis and influence the direction of thrust.
FPP - Fixed Propeller Pitch
This is a type of propeller with fixed blades that cannot rotate.
